PROF. İHSAN BAKIR, M.D. SAYS, ‘AMONG CHILDREN WHO DID NOT JOIN THE HEART SCREENINGS AT SCHOOL, THERE MAY BE THOSE WHO WILL PASS AWAY. PARENTS SHOULD CONVINCE THEIR CHILDREN FOR THE SCREENING.’
The 1-year evaluation of the Online Heart Screening Project was done in the press conference at the Secretariat General of İstanbul Bakırköy Region. The Online Heart Screening Project was started for the age group of 6-18 years (primary, secondary and high school students) to take protective and preventive measures in heart diseases on January 15, 2013. Within the project, an infirmary setting is established at the schools of children on whom electrocardiography will perform and specially-equipped ECG devices and computers are integrated to screen students without interrupting their education.
Stating that screenings have been completed in 2 (Esenyurt and Küçükçekmece) of 13 districts in Bakırköy region in the project started by the Bakırköy Region of the Public Hospitals Association, Secretary General of İstanbul Bakırköy Region Prof. İhsan Bakır, M.D. says, “In line with this objective, we started our Online Heart Screening Project in Edirne which is the first pilot province outside İstanbul in previous November. To date, ECG has been performed on 113 thousand students within the project. 54 thousand of the ECGs have been screened. Pathology has been detected in 9000 of the children. All tests of 3500 have been redone. Conditions that will pose problem if precautions are not taken have been found in 360 students. Such children was subjected to medication, ECHO control or operation.”
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT DIES
. Stating that 35 in every 100 students did not participate in the Online Heart Screening, Prof. Bakır, M.D. says, “Among the students who did not join this screening, there may be those who can lose their lives. A high school student who did not take part in the screening has died recently. We should call to parents so we will not experience such incidents. This is a painless and harmless screening method which allows for the analysis of structural and conductive problems in the hearts of our children. Parents should convince their children to join the screenings.”
Prof. Bakır, M.D. also states that approximately 600 thousand of 1 million students in 13 provinces in the Bakırköy Region of the Public Hospitals Association and in Edirne province can be reached and 17 thousand children can be kept under control and most of them can be operated.
