What is ROBOTIC SURGERY?

To perform a robotic surgery, the surgeon uses the arms on the surgeon’s console next to the patient in the operating room so that he control the arms, which model the configuration of a wrist and which are placed on the patient’s cart. Introduced to the field of surgery while creating a significant enthusiasm; robotic surgery is a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery technique, which has been used actively in Turkey for 10 years. The da Vinci robot, the only example of robotic surgical systems in the world, consists of 3 main sections: The surgeon console, the patient cart, and the vision cart. In laparoscopic surgery; on the other hand, the surgeon and assistant use the instruments themselves at the patient’s bedside.

DOES THE ROBOT PERFORM THE SURGERY?

The concept of ‘robot’ has always attracted people. The first question that comes to mind when you think of a robotic surgery is whether the robot performs the surgery. We can easily say ‘no’ to this question. The operation is performed by the surgeon; it is not performed by a robot. The surgeon commands the robot in robotic surgery and the arms on the patient cart reflect all the commands received from the surgeon simultaneously to perform the operation.

The most important advantage of robotic surgery is that the surgeon can visualize the operation area much more clearly and closely in 3 dimensions owing to the capacity of the robot. Besides similar advantages of this kind, the surgeon will experience less fatigue as he or she can sit during the operation.

WHAT DOES ROBOTIC SURGERY PROVIDE?

For the patient;

– Quick recovery

– Less bleeding and need for less blood for transfusion

– Less risk of complications and infections

– Short stay in hospital and early discharge

– Quick return to daily activities

– A few small incisions and aesthetic appearance after surgery  instead of large incisions of open surgery

– A 3D and 16 times magnified view

– Possibility to intervene with precision

– Prevention of fatigue and reduction of hand tremor

– Easy stitching and easy dissection

IS ROBOTIC SURGERY PERFORMED THROUGH A VIRTUAL IMAGE?

The vision and procedures are completely real in this system but the surgeon performs the operation a few steps ahead from the patient. The surgeon sees the area of operation through the cameras. The procedures are performed using robotic surgical instruments. The procedure is carried out completely simultaneously and every procedure is completed under the control of the surgeon.
