Prof. İhsan Bakır, M.D. points out that heart valve repair is a difficult surgical procedure, stating “It requires an experienced surgeon. It is difficult for us, but it also provides much comfort after the surgery.”
Prof. İhsan Bakır, M.D. made a statement about heart valve repair: “Repair is a surgically hard procedure. It must be performed by an experienced surgeon. It is difficult for us, but it also provides much comfort after the surgery. Our patients do not have to use blood thinners anymore. Drug has severe adverse effects. They are not exposed to them either. This is a specific procedure we performed on the patient. Because we performed the repair using the cardiac membrane. Now the cardiac membrane is around the valve and helps the valve function normally. The previous failure has now been eliminated. Blood flow to lungs has returned to normal. We performed this operation with the robot in a public hospital for the first time. We normally perform the repair procedure by using the cardiac membrane with the open method. But we performed such a repair procedure with the robot for the first time.”
Prof. İhsan Bakır, M.D. states that the patient was operated with a few small incisions and adds, “The patient now has an incision of about 4 cm under the breast on the left. And she has 4 other small incisions of 1 cm. She has an incision of 3-4 cm in the groin. When our patient will wear a bathing suit or a garment reveling her upper body, no incision will be seen in the chest bone area. If it had been an open surgery, our patient would have returned to her normal life about 2 months later. As it would have taken long for the bone to fuse, it would have deprived our patient of her normal life. Now our patient can go back to housework rapidly and even drive back home.”

Saying that they have tried to repair every heart valve they operated, Bakır continues, “Repair is a comfortable method for the patient. It is a method that should always be preferred by a surgeon. There is a saying ‘If it cannot be repaired, the problem is not the repair but the surgeon who cannot do it.’ That is why they tell you to change your surgeon. The world attaches such an importance to repair. If they tell you to change your valve, you should be cautious, about mitral valve I mean. Please ask another surgeon. Patients should consult physicians specialized in repair.”
